CLASSROOM AND TEACHING ASSIGNMENTS
Changes in Classroom Assignment (Notice of Room Change) - Changes in classroom assignments occasionally occur between the printing of the schedule and the issuance of teaching assignments. If a change is made, every effort is made to notify the affected faculty member and/or a Notice of Room Change may be posted on the scheduled classroom door.
Riverside, Moreno Valley, and Norco Campuses - If the assigned room is unsatisfactory or needs additional equipment or maintenance, notify the department chair or appropriate campus Dean of Instruction. Adjustments will be made if possible. The physical facilities of the campus are scheduled to capacity for classes. Moving a single class creates a domino effect and is, therefore, not always feasible. Temporary Class Meeting Changes - If an instructor intends to use an alternative site for a class meeting (library, lab, etc) the IDS must be notified in advance. Hours of Class – Full Term classes are scheduled for a sixty-one minute block for single contact hour classes. Thus, a sixteen week class listed in the Schedule of Classes as meeting from 9:10 a.m.-10:11a.m. would dismiss at 10:11 am, passing time is no longer scheduled inside a single contact hour. For a multi-hour class, the "passing time" should be used for break-time in the middle of the class time-block. A typical 3 and a half hour class will have two 10 minute breaks. Winter and summer session classes typically meet for 140 minutes of instruction and 20 minutes of passing or break time. Generally, classes should break for 10 minutes and be dismissed 10 minutes before the end of the “scheduled” class time. Under no circumstances
should break-time be consolidated and the class dismissed early. Instructors
may not adjust the class meeting times or final exam time without specific
approval from the appropriate department chair and the campus Dean of
Instruction. Room Conflicts - If two or more classes or activities are scheduled in a room at the same time, contact the department chair or the campus Dean of Instruction to resolve the problem. Substitute Teachers - Only the department chair is authorized to hire substitute faculty. Instructors should not make arrangements for their own substitutes without consulting the department chair, leave classrooms or laboratories unattended, or agree to pay substitutes personally. Supervision of Students - Students in classrooms, laboratories, extracurricular, co-curricular activities, or any District event must be supervised at all times by a faculty member employed by the District. Do not leave the class without taking a formal break or dismissing your students [Pursuant to Title V, Division 6, Chapter 9, Subchapter 1, Article 4, Section 58050 for regular classes (not hybrid, online or other atypical courses such as work experience): "The students must be under the immediate supervision of an employee of the district, unless provided otherwise by law" to qualify for apportionment (state funding)].
TEACHING ASSIGNMENTS
Assigned Campus - Riverside Community College is a multi-campus district with campuses in Riverside, Norco and Moreno Valley. Additionally, the College holds classes at a number of community-based "satellite" locations, including the Academy of Justice, various high schools, and business/industry facilities. Faculty may have teaching assignments at one or more locations. All faculty report to a Dean of Instruction and are assigned to a Department Chair. Part-Time Faculty - Part-time faculty teaching assignments are based on the same factors used for full-time faculty as well as availability.
Changes in Assignments, Locations and Class Meetings - All changes in assignments, locations and class meeting times are handled through the department chair and the campus Dean of Instruction. Adjunct faculty assignments may be reassigned to full-time faculty when needed to fulfill contractual obligations.
Full-time Faculty - Development of Teaching Assignment - Full-time faculty teaching assignments are developed by the department chairs and the Campus Dean of Instruction, taking into consideration the preferences and subject expertise of the faculty members and the instructional priorities of the discipline and departments. The Riverside Community College District CTA/NEA contract also establishes parameters relating to teaching assignments.
Teaching Locations - All teaching locations appear on the "tentative teaching assignment" printout and in the printed schedule. All classes are not offered each semester. Many factors affect the number of classes available for hourly teaching assignments: schedules at varying sites, cancellations due to low enrollments, budgetary constraints, and the number of instructors desiring teaching assignments.
